2009 has seen a slew of new detroit producers in what is turning out to be a stunning year of activity for the citys dance music. as the area experiences another test of its collective mettle, these musicians have emerged with some fresh insights. its detroits new wave, and its happening at a time when everyone wants to know whats really going on in the 313. as always planet e is on this wave with monty luke. following up releases on claude von strokes mothership music label, luke transplanted from california to detroit, shunning grace for grit and delivers his first offering for planet e, >art, love & war.< the labels first release since the 69 box set, >art, love & war< matches deep, stark piano stabs with sharp expansive drum hits, its upfront, its beat-driven, its for the dancefloor. the fantastic carl craig remix on the flip throws jagged edges of the original around in unexpected ways, its the first c2 remix on planet e since his epic remake of martin buttrichs >stoned autopilot<

sun dance is the debut full release by berlins rising sun, aka steffen laschinski. the ep features rising sun originals sun dance and candy in my pocket - two blissful tracks of old-style house-influenced minimalism infused with the heady atmosphere of early-90s innocence and joy - distant memories of simpler times - beach parties, bonfires, the sun rising over the sea at dawn… on the b-side, sven weisemann (mojuba, liebe*detail, a.r.t.less, styrax leaves) remixes sun dance, stretching it out into a beautiful shape-shifting epic. all tracks are mastered by masked techno maverick redshape (delsin, present, music man, styrax leaves). steffen laschinski is currently best known as the label boss of influential labels styrax records, styrax leaves and millions of moments. rising sun have previously featured on split artist releases on the workshop and ruin labels. b side plays inside out

this is a long awaited release on theomatic from a russian-born (now czech-based) house-quartet d-pulse. this definitely should have happened before as all d-pulse members and theomatic’s commander andrei zakharov (an-2) are fellow-townsmen and have known each over many years. d-pulse are known for their expressive live performances (guitar, bass and keys), everything you hear they play live and their unique vibe can shake any audience, be it hip moscow cuties or shy hick-town chicks. the band’s hectic schedule has put this ep on hold for several months, but at last guys managed to organize themselves and lay final touches to the production. the a-side is a mellow, spaced-out disco jam called ‘prekrasna’ - the russian for ‘beautiful’, especially when referred to ladies. the dancefloor-aimed ‘moments’ on the flip side starts off with hypnotic, dubbed-out guitar and atmospheric synths laid over fat house beat. it gradually leads to the breakdown followed by guitar driven blast-off and takes you to the orbital heights from wherever you are.

ryo murakami whos recent releases include dessous and moriss audio and is known for leading the younger generation artists announces his newest release on his very own label panrecords. the promo is already being heavily played on the jus-ed radio show. the tunes of the analog drum machine coming from the bottom of the deep seas along with our friend amrs quiet yet crazy voice sampling echoes on a1s lost it and a deep arrangement is added to the coupling track dive a elevate. the fat analog synthesizer by dublins lerosal that resembles chicago and detroit sounds are remixed with the rhythm machines low range sounds. the sense of flow from beginning to end is at 90.5. the complete 4 songs are sent from tokyo out to the world scene

a classically-trained jazz virtuoso and national rock n roll hero in argentina, gutis double 12inch pack for desolat will leave you in no doubt of his ability to twist a snaking groove into something echoingly hypnotic. the tracks contained here are already a favourite in the record boxes of artists like loco dice, carl cox and marco carola, while gutis life story could itself be the subject of a story by jorge luis borges: >i leave to several futures (not to all) my garden of forking paths<. just two years after his first live sets in europe, desolat is proud to present gutis las cosas que no se tocan. the beats follow guti across continents: mr good vibes was composed in a hotel room in stuttgart after an argument with a friend, while the serious dancefloor vibes of sasa, the hustler and ieuuu were channelled in martinez studio. ieuuu and the hustler feature slices of glamorous, haunting vocals by jayson walker, a british singer that guti discovered on myspace. and sasa boasts gutis own vocal touches. meanwhile, the track aguanile is inspired by one of his favourite melodies as a child, one that he’s collected many versions of. the last track on the release, el campeon, reaches a bittersweet ending in the wide open space between percussive trills and a cut-out refrain, inspired by gutis favourite latin storylines of broken hearts and pain.

direct is stripped back, raw house tracks. bleepy yet with plenty of deepness, its refreshing to see a producer out there not following suit, but producing an individual sound. the direct remix comes in classic alvarado style, heavy tribal beats, dubby reverberations, trippy deepness, and dense and engaging production. his remix is already picking up support from the likes of dixon, rocky (x-press 2), paul woolford and jay tripwire.

reaching back through time to lay hands in the forges of metal, nycs children riff out the present with their debut, hard times hanging at the end of the world. formed through jam sessions by guitarists skyler spohn, jonny rad ollsin (formerly of vancouvers s.t.r.e.e.t.s.), and drummer adam bennati (of early man), the group laid waste to clubs in and around the city beginning in late 2006, and have kept shredding onward. tradition meets stamina head on throughout hard times six massive tracks. with intricate, narrative dual guitar work and a frenzied, wired demeanor children bring it all together: thrash advancements, serious girth, familiar passages crosscut with relentless speed, a formidable edge, and self proclaimed spiritual conspiracy party riffs.

time for the next various artists ep introducing 3 upcoming producers to the scene. from italy comes guiseppe cennamo with a powerful deep/techhouse track building a great athmosphere in the club. greeck guy bengoa delivers a really warm building up deephouse track with a nice vocal line by julie naked showing the coolness of sunny greece at least mr. carlos sanchez & dj ray from gran canaria! like is based on a deep organ bassline building up to an amazing break with a catchy melody. listened once, you wont get this track out of your ears

the third single from the young new label founded by d julz, bass culture brings the noise! kasper is one of the most promising house talents coming out of the madrid scene. kasper is at the core, featuring players such as alex under and damian schwartz, his remix of the cheeky classic >r u ok< by ambivalent on minus, put him firmly on the map as a talented house music dj / producer. since then he hasnt stopped releasing quality recordings for items, things, mupa, cyclical, bloop, bass culture & more...with a musical background comprised of a broad variety of music from post punk, rock, jazz, rap, and of course electronic music - being specially influenced by labels such as studio 1, basic channel, profan, chain reaction, mosaic, schatrax, perlon

the second installment in the split lp series is a dutch affair, but it has everything it needs and more to soon make name far abroad. each side of the record contains a complete work clocking in at about twenty minutes.
side a is >chime ep< by hydrus. the four tracks they contributed stand out because of their meticulous production and their wonderful sense of melody and emotion. this is music in the best electronic tradition, blending hiphop, idm, ambient, funk, drone and badass breaks. hydrus begins this twenty-minute journey with a funky bump and end it in a mess of nervous percussion, splintered to dust.
side b is an altogether positive and quirky piece of work by kettel. like most of his work of the last few years, >yellow baron< is exploding with beautiful melody. in six tracks kettel puts everything to work to make your head bop, to bring a smile to your face and a tear to the corner of your eye. classic stuff, without losing sense of experiment.

with smashing contributions by electro lord legowelt from dirty brown the hague and bleep addict garçon taupe from the bourgeois slums of amsterdam, narrominded presents the fourth installment in its renowned split lp series. both sides of this split lp comprise a whole ep in length, and the contributions have in common that they are both deeply rooted in electro music.
on garçon taupes wittenburg ep, eighties infected drum computer beats and heavy bass lines pave the way for some rather cheerful and unpretentious melodies. the five tracks were mixed to tape at rude 66s triple six lounge studio, and reveal influences from electronic pioneers like yellow magic orchestra and mantronix, to todays acid freaks like luke vibert and like a tim. the end result is a catchy mixture of electro and acid.
legowelt explores the darker corners of electronic music in four tracks leaning on eerie vocals and grungy electro beats. his land rovers in astrophysics ep takes us to mysterious environments. we are spacing out on the force of the stars, the universe, etc, and dancing to hypnotic drums on a mystical trip to pago pago west samoa. legowelt not only knows how to to satisfy a dance floor, but is also capable of deeply appealing to the listeners imagination.

classic chicago vocal house

uk house music and disco superhero rob mello has been instrumental in shaping the evolution of the uk sound since way back when. through labels like classic, luxury service and the way ahead of its time disco elements series on azuli in the 90s, not to mention countless innovative remixes and collaborations, his production output has shone out like a supernova for well over a decade. this is a return to songwriting, to tracks with longevity and a timelessness which transcends forgettable vogues. butterfly is the debut release from this dynamic quattro known as beulah heights - three producers/writers and one singer. a dream team collaboration between royal college of music and child prodigy lyn goddard, dj/producer and film scorer rob mello, producer/dj nathan boddy aka the illustrious office gossip and the amazing vocal talent of singer katie beadle. so here we have it, the majestic first release on beulah heights. a slowly pulsating monster of a cut, shot through with a futuristically executed homage to early 80s productions and more than enough girth to guarantee a powerful response from the floor. already road tested to rapturous response, this is an absolute beauty.

the eleventh episode of disco deviance comes straight out of liverpool in the uk from the emerging talent that is cosmic boogie. starting out as a collective (inspired by local dj legend greg wilson) based around the cosmic boogie website, which is dedicated to pushing groove based music and knowledge about the scene, cosmic boogie has developed into a dj persona and quality imprint in its own right.

its amazing to have this kind of music coming directly out of turbo hq, it nails a sound that we have always tried to cultivate. minimal without being boring, trippy without being predictable, unafraid of melody, and with just enough analog imperfection and warmth to it.
both of the remixers we chose represent different sounds in techno that have influenced mikes sound.

giorgio gigli is an italian minimal-trance maestro, an incredibly modern renaissance man who is also a trained sommelier.** he is rising in the ranks and catching up in profile to his occasional production partner, donato dozzy. hopefully we will have more of his tracks on turbo soon.

hobo is a fellow canadian best known for his excellent work on m¦nus. rumor has it, he borrowed richies quad-macro template file to finish the final version of this remix... whatever he did, his second effort came up huge, this mix is excellent.

kebacid is the production alias for turbo all-stars jesper dahlbäck and jori hulkkonen. their previous releases on jespers defunct blank ltd are some of the best acid tracks of the decade. this is a monster that ought to keep all the die-hard turbo fans happy.

luke slaters mote evolver label is not pulling any punches. having shaken the techno scene to its boots last month with the release of ortin cams no-holes-barred >carnage<, the label moves on to their funky 13th release.
the name cari lekebusch is synonymous with what has made techno the musical powerhouse that it has become. globally recognized as a founding force behind the swedish techno movement alongside the triumvirate of adam beyer, jesper dahlbäck and joel mull, lekebuschs distinctive musical style and creative integrity has graced leading label from drumcode to soma to harthouse and turbo and spawned a career that has maintained over nearly two decades.
spindizzy is a deftly crafted funked-up tech house track. constructed from a palette of harmonically aligned keys, bass and horns, its intensity comes from the measured way in which each element is given the space to breath its own energy into the mix. pacey but musical, subtle yet memorable, this is a standout record.
luke slater adding his bass sodden l.b dub corp twist to the track completes the package. deeply dubbed-out tribal rhythms take the mix on a more left-of centre path that winds through a busy soundscape of atmospheric acoustics that seem to breathe in deeply before being exhaled in a release of firing percussion.

the first of 2 planned 12inch samplers to come out from ytre rymden dansskolas debut album. bange anelser appears in a slightly longer edit done by yours truly and on the b-side youll get the remix from hotly tipped production team frisvold & lindbæk. it took us a few years to involve dear mr.lindbæk(rune)but it was worth the wait. trippy disko at its most…. eh… trippy? anyway, a dubby delight kahluha madness and u sving appear in original version from the album, both personal favourites which we just had to have on vinyl. thomas

faisty records returns with its second offering of up front bass music, featuring two tracks crafted by dj and producer dom. suntime is a dark, brooding stomper sure to give your subs a workout whilst the flip side, tall tales has a lighter more energetic feel that is sure to bring a crowd to life. the brighton based producer dom has had a string of successful releases both on faisty records and on clandestine cultivations and his tracks regularly get crowds moving in clubs everywhere. watch out in the near future for forthcoming releases on faisty, clandestine and l2s.

kraken are rolling again, with their second release in as many weeks (check out krkn009), and its good to have the denmark based dons back! very little is known about a side artist and la resident jaybird, but im sure plenty of people will be on the hunt for info after this little number drops. absolutely relentless, crushing dubstep music, a refreshingly nasty little number reminiscent in atmosphere to one of krakens earliest releases eye of the demon by wolfman (jsl), this tune is currently tearing up clubs worldwide, with support from 2000f and notably featuring on hatcha & crazy ds kiss fm radio show, you re gunna love this one! legendary kraken artist jsl pops up on the flip with a brand new beat, kept relatively under wraps this one comes out of nowhere and smacks is straight round the chops like kimbo slice! act quickly on this one, it wont last.

you may not have heard so much from andre (aka &me) so far. instead of the flash and glitter associated with most of his producer colleagues, hes preferred to stay in the shadows, co-producing and ghost writing for artists like dj hell and terranova. now after putting out his first solo single on keinemusik, which was supported by all the key players (front room label boss jesse rose, luke solomon, gabriel ananda, danny tenaglia and dubfire plus many more) &me is finally ready to go public as they say. he may have taken some time to figure out his own style of blending techno and house music but now hes out theres really no escape. with a name like an attention deficit childs mantra its a wonder he stayed in so long. the on ep is an excursion into the type of techno dusted pulsating minimal house that has been so big for artists like luciano esse and arnaud le texier and which is heard on heavy rotation in berlin meccas like bar25. with a side on ever present digital squelches (reminiscent of a rolf harrris style wobble board) are laid over shakers, stripped-back beat and the familiar on vocal. its not hard to understand why tiefschwarz have been rinsing it for quite some time now as a huge afterhours groover. b side talking days, swimming in lush deep techno elements, weaves through more melodic territory but is no less infectious

mentalic s follow-up to highway man contains 4 tracks ranging from freak out slapstick techno to more melodious pieces. played & supported by stephan bodzin, paco osuna, style of eye, lexy, marc depulse, max cooper, roland m. dill and many more.

rmxs by shonky, alex celler, sierra sam !! bloody mary’s black pearl made quite a splash this summer, receiving a storm of praise from djs and critics alike – especially impressive considering it was her debut album, as well as the first full-length record on contexterrior. awarded 4 out of 5 stars from dj mag and resident advisor, and getting play from a wide cast of djs (tiefschwarz, adam beyer, luciano and so on), black pearl has set itself apart as contender for techno album of the year!

after recent successes on his other label, donnacha costello returns to his look long imprint with the storming one sided monster that is ten thousand hours. to begin, an ominous, growling, analog siren calls out from costellos roland sh-101, alerting us that our presence is required on the dancefloor before rattling, shuffling hi-hats mark out the groove and we head out on an ecstatic 7 minute analogue journey through a universe inhabited by wispy shadows of s-express, 808 state, mathew jonson and costellos own classic colorseries sound. words dont do justice to this one. simply drop the needle on the record and escape to an alternate universe on a magic carpet of analog synths and drum machines. ten thousand hours appears as a very limited one sided vinyl edition and wont be re-pressed. dont sleep

aduly only 36 introduces yakine on a + b with a julien chaptal remix. drop it - a jackin, upbeat house cut with lots of bounce to the ounce. solid groovy swing, thick bassline, and some bboy vox stabs for some in yo face hits. nice and tracky, take it to for a lengthy mix in or out, its a pick up. stickney - punchy and tracky with a tight roll for a smooth, jazzier drop stickney is asking for a prime time spot in the set. splashed with a little chi filter, the bassline roll brings the kicker. hot track with smoldering style. julien chaptal remix has a pop-lockin house feel to it with its sliced and diced elements, this is a tight jam. sweet build for a stack full of speakers, could be dirty or classy, either or this tracks works a sweaty floor.

the choice of anja schneider for remix duties was an obvious one, the pair first met on a shuttle bus to an event and in short stead paul was co-writing for anja, becoming part of the driving force behind her huge debut album ‘beyond the valley’, now she pulls out all the stops to reciprocate with this standout reworking.
first up on the package is the anja schneider remix of ‘three weeks’, the opening cut from paul’s recent album. here the pair, deconstruct the parts and rebuild things into a deep and hypnotic version that has instant dancefloor appeal stamped all over it. solid, chunky drums rub up against simple spacey synth lines and warm pads to huge effect. bearing in mind the superb quality of the original this is a job well done, and a real addition to this great package.
next we have the original of ‘three weeks’, a track named after the extensive time it took to record. paul had originally intended to record the album in 6-8 weeks, then ended up spending nearly half of his allocated time on this opener. but it has to be said it was worth the effort. this is a slice of solid tech inspired house with subtle vocal elements and a musicality that cuts through the records club based nature. excellent stuff.
finally we have diamant flute, another winner from the ‘me, myself and live’ album. deep and highly engaging this again displays paul outstanding talents as a producer, weaving melodic elements deep into the mix and retaining an incredible underground electronic sound.

rippertons perspectiv label with its 2nd split release giving new talents a stage. 1st split is a huge release with two sublime tracks by agnes and johnny white. not sure if this one tops it... but crowdpleaser and entlet deliver both two tracks that stand out of the pack!!. especially the b2 track by entlet needs some extra attention... a contemporary house track that has so much hidden power. phat old school bassline kills it everywhere.. and then the tracks continues to build and build.... like a modern dj pierre wildpitch affair! crowdpleaser delivers two solid tracks that went straight into the dj sets of many influential djs. highly effective and useful house tools (a description that actually doesnt do justice to these tracks which are much more then just tools!) ripperton proofs once again to have a great ear for new talents!!

akiko kiyama is back on lmd after kick starting the label with her acclaimed misidia monarchy ep. since then her sound has matured and grown, the flesh got spirit ep shows this in more ways than one. with a brooding sub low bassline & twisted intricate layers a genius vocal comes into play lifting the track only then to be placed back into the depths of the abyss. treppen is a peak time destroyer, sucking you into a hypnotizing rhthym that builds and builds creating a feeling that something is about to happen, strange vocals that sound like lost souls haunt the track hooking you in only to spit you back out onto a roller coaster baseline. sometimes is a harmonic cruise control roller that takes you on a trip through akikos wonderland.

just like the excellent joshua series this is jay-js take on rnb meets house edit: choppy, dubbed out intro that leads into a killer vocal duet by rising rnb act koffee brown. b-side features a rousing gospel house track with heartfelt vocals and big chorus.

bodo elsel has only done a handful of records and the two that i have known and loved since 1998 were put out on playhouse, the excellent housey sister-label of mighty klang elektronik. one track in particular, discount baby, has always stood out in my mind as a high water mark in the sacred art of groove (you may have heard of it). punchy accents and resonant bass layered with trippy vocal loops, its dubby acid house of the highest order, made by a mysterious german lego-master, who the a&r team of mike mind and thomas st shindig managed to coax back into activity.
it only took bodo a year to answer mr. minds email, but he eventually delivered three amazing tracks... >haustier< revitalizes piano house. >mai< is incredible, and >mein haus< is one of the top few all-time expressions of the greatness/meaning of germany, putting it in the fine company of the autobahn, sven väth and christmas-market schwein. nice wibes!!
the icing on the cake was that bodo made it very clear he wanted no part in royalties or any of that business crap... he just wanted 42 copies of the record. yes. 42.

roughly translated, hasta el fin means >the very last number of the night<, appropriate when you consider this is gigolos final release of 2009. the a&r process at gigolo is a constant and very simple formula! if hell likes it, plays it and gets a good reaction from the crowd then it needs to come out on his record label! no other record fits the criteria more the >hasta el fin<. this is a record that featured heavily in hells festivals and club sets and was played at the end of every after-hour he found himself. but its beginning is a little less finite.
the genesis came late last year when oliver ton invited various musicians for a jamming session. in the spirit of some masterful moments in music oliver ton and production partner ronald christoph captured something unique sounding with a dance record built largely around a vocal, guitar and piano performance. it was immediately signed to berlin based white records and assigned the fitting cat. no. of white999!!!
hell, an early supporter of both the record and label was smitten, personally requesting the license for gigolo. once this was granted he approached tony lionni for a remix. for many djs, including hell, tony lionnis >found a place< is without doubt one of the biggest records of 2009. so combining the talents of these two artists would appear to be a no brainer, and the results speak volumes. taking the vocal hook, layering it over a tough piano stab and italo style disco rhythm is the order of the day. as we approach the end of another decade for gigolo and the first of new millennium we are proud to present our last number of the 2009!

this time the frankfurt based duo chris hope & andre walter (stigmata, perc trax) sended us 3 wicked tracks and we are proud to present them on our fresh driving forces recordings imprint. the >vibra slap< ep is exactly what a state of the art techno release needs to be. dark and atmospheric, low in the speed but straight kickin and full of wicked sounds and effects. on the a side you can find the name giving title track called vibra slap which is a pumping and crazy clubtool. the very long breakdown and its noisy leadsound will let every crowd go totally crazy. with septum and otum 288 side b delivers you 2 very dark and andre walter typical tracks for the peaktime of special and raw techno happenings. these tracks seem to come out straight from hell!

2nd single from the patrick cowley & jorge socarras album >catholic<. bleeding edge remixing by oni ayhun and noble editing by morgan geist added for your pleasure. while still everybody keeps guessing whos behind the mysterious and burning hot works of oni ayhun, macros got the mans first ever remix! o.a. obscured cowleys >memory fails me< with his trademark darkness and took it to the edge of engineering. and its got all that feeling, too! if you asked yourself what a forward-thinking patrick cowley might have done today - here is a serious offering. >burn brighter flame< is the disco heart of the album. with all disco crate digging of the decade, >bbf< is the ultimate find. since the original artists had intended this one to be a single theres also a stunning instrumental! we just remember how everybody got tears of joy when finn johannsen mixed the different versions of this for the first time at berlins picknick. who could have been asked for an edit of this gem other than metro areas morgan geist? creating a dialogue between the vocal and instrumental versions, his edit offers even more variety for the dj to mix in and out of this great tune.
